Hélice Issue 2

We would like to thank our readers for their interest and the very positive inputs for our inaugural issue of Hélice. Feedback indicates that Hélice offers a lively platform for interaction between scholars, practitioners and policy-makers.

Hélice provides an opportunity for innovation policy and practice dialogue, and for the exchange of views on research in a less formal and more cooperative and interactive environment. For this purpose we have an open dialogue philosophy, where we welcome feedback, comments, critiques, additions or alternative opinions, as well as reflections on any published article.

Hélice represents a forum to publicize your research to a wide and knowledgeable audience, and to rapidly disseminate research results. If you have working papers, short articles, or comments on
the published articles, as well as news about ongoing or prospective projects, etc, to contribute to the THA Newsletter, we would be delighted to consider them for inclusion in future issues.

In this volume, we are pleased to present articles from (a) Martin Meyer, who provides a overview on indicators and the Triple Helix with bibliometric guidance, (b) Dessy Irawati, who reflects on
academic-business-government interactions in a timely article on Indonesia, which is the 2012 Conference venue, (c) Per Erik Ellström and his colleagues, who share their experiences with the
HELIX Excellence Centre at Linköping University, and (d) Guilherme Ary Plonski, whom we are happy to announce as the Hélice Brazilian regional correspondent, who shares his experiences
at The Center for Technology Policy and Management at University of São Paulo.

This issue also includes information on new initiatives. To strengthen THA membership internationally, we established a THA Global Chapter Programme to set up regional THA Chapters for
those with an interest in the Triple Helix field to meet and share ideas at a local forum. We also include details on the international THA Ambassadors Programme, where we are reaching out to
appropriately qualified professionals who feel they would like to become TH Ambassadors. If you have an interest in either initiative, the TH Association would be pleased to receive an application.

We as the Editors of Hélice, and TH Association, appreciate your time and interest in receiving news from us. We encourage you to share your reflections to sustain and extend the innovative
dialogue that Hélice is initiating, and invite you to contribute to this effort.

Triple Helix XI International Conference

The Triple Helix in a context of global change: continuing, mutating or unravelling? London, Sunday 7 – Wednesday 10 July 2013

Never has the Triple Helix mission been more timely. Globally the economy faces significant challenges – unemployment, low or no growth, spiralling healthcare needs, rapidly emerging digital business models, unsustainable changes to the environment. The need for universities and businesses to work together and take action alongside governments is critical.

How can the Triple Helix build innovative markets, places and networks, and what are the challenges to open innovation, demand and business models?
How can the Triple Helix build more innovation-friendly financial institutions, and what are the challenges to the business of banking in driving innovation and entrepreneurship, especially in SMEs?
How can the Triple Helix enhance universities as interactive partners in our innovation systems, and what are the challenges to the absorptive capacity of academic knowledge within firms and by other users?
How can the Triple Helix enhance skills for innovation, and what are the challenges to management and leadership skills for high growth firms?
How can public action drive innovation in the private sector, and what are the challenges to public procurement, as well as intellectual property management and IPR policies?

Summary of the past Triple Helix Conferences

2011. The IX Triple Helix International Conference “Silicon Valley: Global Model or Unique Anomaly?” (http://www.triplehelixconference.org) has been held on 11-14 July 2011 in Stanford University, California, USA.

2010. The Triple Helix VIII International Conference on University, Industry and Government Linkages has been held on 20-22 October 2010 in Madrid, Spain. The main theme of the conference has been “Triple Helix in the Development of Cities of Knowledge, Expanding Communities and Connecting Regions”.

2009. The seventh conference (Triple Helix VII – http://www.triple-helix-7.org/) was held inGlasgow in June 2009. The Conference encompassed three panels (Ministerial, Universities, Industry).

2007. The sixth conference (Triple Helix VI -http://www.nus.edu.sg/nec/TripleHelix6/) was held in Singapore in May 2007. The Conference theme was: Emerging Models for the Entrepreneurial University: Regional Diversities or Global Convergence.

2005. The fifth conference(Triple Helix V) was held in Turin, Italy in May 2005 with the theme “The Capitalization of Knowledge: Cognitive, Economic, Social and Cultural Aspects.

2002. The fourth conference Triple Helix IV was held both in Copenhagen, Denmark and Lund, Sweden (November 2002); the conference theme was “Breaking Boundaries and Building Bridges”, which reflected on the conference site: the bridge as a metaphor for boundary spanning interactions, linking the different national cultures and innovation systems.

2000. The third conference (Triple Helix III), held in Rio de Janeiro (April 2000), was titled “The Endless Transition”. Its theme was the relationship of science, industry, and government and their role in creating the conditions for future innovation. A special focus was placed on the contribution of research in job creation and social wealth.

1998. The second conference (Triple Helix II) took place in Purchase, New York (January 1998) and dealt with “The Future Location of Research”.

1996. The first Triple Helix conference (Triple Helix I) was launched in Amsterdam in January 1996 with a meeting titled “A Triple Helix of University-Industry-Government Relations”.
