Biography
After doctoral and postdoctoral research at Southampton, Professor Durrani joined the University of Strathclyde, as a Lecturer in 1976, and was appointed Professor in the Faculty of Engineering in 1982. He was Deputy Principal (Pro-Vice Chancellor) at Strathclyde from 2000-2006, where he had oversight responsibility for lifelong learning, staff development, information technology infrastructure, promotion of entrepreneurship, and international linkages. Since October 2009 he is a Research Professor at the University. He has held external/visiting appointments at Princeton, University of Southern California, Hong Kong, Stirling, the UAE and Chengdu, China; and has been an advisor on research and higher education to the governments of The Netherlands, Portugal, China, India, UAE and Pakistan. For the past twenty-five years, he has worked on and supervised some sixty projects sponsored by the UK Research Councils, government and industry, the US government and the EU, amongst others. He has supervised some forty PhD students, and is the author/co-author of more than 350 papers and six books. Professor Durrani has been a Director of:
- UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (2003-09)
- Glasgow Chamber of Commerce (2004 –present)
- UK Equality Challenge Unit (2008-10)
He is Director of UK National Commission for UNESCO since 2011. He has been Vice President (Natural Sciences) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2007-10), and is currently Vice President (International). He was a Council Member of the Scottish Funding Council (2006-09), which has oversight responsibility for the funding and quality of all higher and further education institutions in Scotland. He has been an External Examiner to several universities, in the UK and abroad, and has advised the governments of Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, UAE and Pakistan on issues related to higher education.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Academy of Engineering; the IEEE and the IET; and an Associate Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences.
