Biography
Dr. Haris Piplas is author and collaborator of several urban, landscape and
architectural projects in Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Morocco, Eastern and
Western Europe, Latin America, China and other regions. He is co-author of the book
"Global Urban Toolbox", which highlights spatial and infrastructural challenges under
the influence of economic-social, geopolitical and cultural aspects in case study
cities, among others: Berlin, Los Angeles, Zurich, Detroit, Cape Town, Beijing, Madrid,
London, São Paulo etc. Dr. Piplas was the editor-in-chief of two issues of the
Journal of the European Foundation for Landscape Architecture (EFLA),
entitled "Adaptability of Cities" and "Political Implications for the Urban
Landscape".
He figured as was pavilion curator of the 15th Architecture Biennale in Venice
and keynote speaker at numerous international conferences. He is also a
member of ISOCARP (International Society of City and Regional Planners), the
former Young Leader Chairman of the Urban Land Institute, nominator of the Aga
Khan Prize for Architecture and member of the Advisory Board for Built
Environment of the European Forum Alpbach. He is the initiator of the
“Reactivate Sarajevo Urban Transformation project” and figured as
a consultant for various international organization such as IPBES and UNECE.
Dr. Piplas figured as Research Fellow at Politecnico di Milano, holds a Master of
Urban Design from the Technical University of Berlin and a Dr. sc. from the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Department of Architecture. In
addition to teaching, research and practice activities he has been active in the
conception of innovative participatory instruments such as the Urban Simulation
“Action on the Real City”. He was principal investigator for the applied research
project “Smart and Creative Cities in Central and Eastern Europe” that produced
interactive digital tools for smart, inclusive and sustainable urban planning. In
addition, Dr. Piplas was project manager of the Urbanization Incubator as
part of the institutional development of the polydisciplinary institute ISTP
(Institute of Science Technology and Policy) at ETH Zurich.
Since 2020 he co-directs the Swiss Integrated Urban Solutions sector of
Drees&Sommer Switzerland, one of the international market leaders in
innovative planning, consultancy and engineering.
